Location: Maidencreek Township, Berk Co., PA | Owner: PennDOT District 5-0 | Cost: $13 Million | Completion: 2022

Details: JBC was the Prime Consultant providing Construction Inspection services during the construction of SR 222-22S, SR 222/73 & Genesis Drive in Maidencreek Township. The project consisted of the full reconstruction of SR 222 from just south of the Willow Creek crossing, to just north of the Schaeffer Road intersection. The prior condition of this stretch of SR 222 was a single lane roadway in each direction with a shared turn lane; signalized intersections occurred at both SR 73 and at Genesis Drive/Tamarack Blvd, with a non-signalized intersection at Schaeffer Rd.

The newly reconstructed SR 222 included widening SR 222 from two lanes to four lanes and sometimes five for the full 2-mile length of the project to include two full travel lanes in each direction as well as the full reconstruction of the culvert bridge over Willow Creek. To improve traffic flow and make the roadway much safer, the signalized intersection of US 222/Genesis Drive was fully reconstructed as a modern roundabout. The non-signalized intersection of SR 222/Schaeffer Road saw the addition of a roundabout as well. The signalized intersection of SR 222 and SR 73 was widened on each leg, including installation of up-to-date signal equipment. The project included various stormwater management facilities and basins throughout the project limits.

Traffic roundabouts save lives, minimize accident injuries. Reduced speeds through the roundabout make the roadway much safer for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists alike. With the advantage of slowing traffic and maintaining traffic flow, roundabouts are also better for the environment. Less idling has the added benefit of reduced vehicle emissions and fuel consumption.
