Details: This project involved the replacement of the existing bridge structure crossing the Susquehanna River at Milepost 245.72 with Pennsylvania’s first vehicular concrete segmental bridges. The selection of precast concrete technology allowed for an economical solution to spanning the wide river and minimized the time frame for construction access in the river which was susceptible to winter ice flows and spring run-off. The twin concrete box girders are approximately 5,900 feet long by 57 feet wide with typical spans of 150 feet. They have been constructed on a new alignment just north of the existing bridge and carry three lanes of traffic eastbound and three lanes westbound. As a member of the Construction Management team, JBC provided construction inspection and documentation services for the project which involved roadway construction (concrete and bituminous); segmental bridge; interchange and toll facility; realignment of highway; prestressed casting of concrete segments; bridge structures on access roadways; and river causeway construction.
