Celebrating Leadership and Inspiring the Future of Engineering

Celebrating Leadership
Celebrating an Inspiring Leader.

Great careers don’t happen in isolation—they’re built through curiosity, connection, and a willingness to lift others along the way. At JBC Associates, we’re proud to celebrate a leader who embodies all of that and more. Our President, Janet B. Cunningham, PE, has been named the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Philadelphia Section’s 2026 Civil Engineer of the Year—a well-deserved honor that reflects not only her remarkable career, but the lasting impact she’s made on the engineering community and the many professionals she’s inspired along the way.

In her acceptance speech, Janet reflected not only on her own journey, but she emphasized the importance of getting involved in professional industry organizations, not just as members, but as active contributors who can influence meaningful change. She encouraged other professionals in the audience to step forward as mentors—to share their knowledge, guide the next generation, and support opportunities for young professionals to grow. Janet also challenged attendees to extend that impact beyond the workplace by encouraging their children, students, and young people in their communities to explore engineering and construction careers. Her message was clear: the future of the profession depends on how we invest in others today. When you teach or mentor, you position yourself as someone shaping the field.

A Career Built on Commitment—to Engineering and the Industry
What makes this recognition even more meaningful is Janet’s long-term involvement with ASCE—a testament to her long-standing commitment to the profession and the engineering community. It’s her engagement across multiple organizations that exemplifies how sustained involvement can amplify impact, expand influence, and create a lasting legacy.

Engagement is not just about participation—it’s about building your voice in the industry. Throughout her career, Janet has prioritized engagement in the organizations that shape and strengthen our industry. She is actively involved in numerous professional organizations, including:

  • American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) – Life Member
  • Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS)
  • American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE)
  • American Council of Engineering Companies of Pennsylvania (ACEC/PA)
  • Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) – Past Mid-Atlantic Chapter President
  • Society of American Military Engineers (SAME)
  • Associated Pennsylvania Constructors (APC)

Her decades-long dedication to these organizations reflects a career that extends far beyond projects—one rooted in mentorship, collaboration, and advancing the profession.

Why Professional Organizations Matter
Janet’s journey highlights a powerful truth: industry involvement is not optional—it is transformational.

Professional organizations like ASCE, ASHE, ACEC, WTS, APC and CMAA play a critical role in shaping careers by connecting you to peers and leaders — long-term engagement that turns those connections into trusted relationships and opportunities.

Here’s how:

  1. Expanding Your Network and Opportunities
Building relationships is essential in engineering and construction. These organizations connect professionals with peers, clients, and industry leaders—often leading to career opportunities, partnerships, and mentorship that would not otherwise be possible.

  2. Accelerating Professional Growth
From technical seminars to leadership roles on committees and boards, involvement provides hands-on experience that complements day-to-day work.

  3. Staying at the Forefront of the Industry
Professional organizations are hubs for innovation, best practices, and emerging trends. Members gain access to continuing education, thought leadership, and industry insights that keep them competitive and informed.

  4. Developing Leadership and Influence
Your voice strengthens when others begin to trust and rely on your insight. Participation allows professionals—especially young professionals—to step into leadership positions early in their careers. Whether organizing events, contributing to policy discussions, or serving on committees, these experiences build confidence and influence.

  5. Giving Back and Shaping Communities
Organizations like ASCE and WTS advocate for infrastructure, sustainability, and community development. Getting involved allows professionals to have a voice in shaping policies and projects that impact society at large.

Scholarships often serve as the first step in that journey, helping students transition from observers of the industry to active participants with a voice and a future in shaping it.

These scholarships do far more than provide financial support; they create meaningful opportunities that can accelerate career growth from the very beginning.

Applying for scholarships with professional industry organizations such as ASCE, WTS and CMAA allows students to stand out early in their careers. The application process itself encourages students to reflect on their goals, demonstrate leadership potential, and articulate their passion for the industry—skills that are essential for long-term success. Even before receiving an award, simply applying helps students build confidence and begin positioning themselves as emerging professionals.

Model for the Next Generation
Janet Cunningham’s recognition as Civil Engineer of the Year is not only a celebration of her accomplishments—it is a reflection of her philosophy: that success in engineering goes hand-in-hand with service to the profession. Engagement becomes powerful when you move from being present to being heard, respected, and influential within your industry.

A Call to Young Professionals
Now more than ever, connection is at your fingertips. For those just starting their careers, Janet offers clear guidance:

  • Join at least one professional organization early
  • Attend events, contribute to discussions and build relationships
  • Volunteer for committees or leadership roles
  • Seek mentors—and become one as your career grows

Celebrating Leadership

Celebrating an Inspiring Leader
Congratulations, Janet, on this remarkable achievement. Your career—and your commitment to professional organizations like ASCE and beyond—continues to inspire the next generation of engineers to get involved, lead, and make a difference. We also extend our heartfelt congratulations to all of this year’s award recipients and scholarship winners, whose accomplishments and dedication represent the bright future of our profession.
