Demolition has heated up this summer. As this transformational project moves forward, it’s worth sharing — the demo phase in particular, of this modernization effort by the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission in Open Road Tolling (ORT) Conversion.
Currently, all of the abandoned toll plazas across the eastern corridor are being demolished to make way for smoother, uninterrupted travel. Our teams are managing and inspecting the phased demolition process, ensuring safe traffic flow while removing outdated infrastructure and restoring roadways.
Work is underway at seven key interchanges, including Valley Forge, Lansdale, Pocono, and Wyoming Valley, with completion expected in late 2026.
“The process is a little different at each location”, explained Turnpike Senior Project Manager, Steve Dale within a PA Turnpike newsletter article. “Traffic will flow through the outside toll lanes as crews demolish the toll booths, islands and overhead structures in the middle. Once the roadway is patched and restored, crews will shift traffic to the newly open middle lanes as they tear down the outside toll booths.”
Once ORT goes LIVE statewide in 2027, western toll plaza demolition will begin — paving the way for more cost-effective tolling systems and better connectivity for Pennsylvania communities.
JBC’s Project Manager, Brian Moore, PE, shared, “It was a privilege to be part of this historic project that is using technology to transform the landscape of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, making travel safer and more convenient for motorists.”
The JBC team is honored to help move this innovative project across the finish line, saying goodbye to the past and building the future of travel here in our communities and beyond.
Watch to see how progress is taking shape.
